Endemic Birds Of Andaman

Overview

The Andamans bring to mind beautiful landscapes with clear waters, sandy shores and beautiful sunsets, or even exploring the mysterious world under the sea – an ideal summer getaway to destress from your everyday life.

But apart from being home to the beautiful island views and great water activities, the Andaman Islands are also a delight for birdwatchers. Being closer to Myanmar and Thailand and Indonesia than India, the avifauna is also closely related to that of Southeast Asia, and unlike much of the
South Asian birds found in the rest of the country.

A must-do for any birdwatcher or bird photographer visiting the islands, Chidiya Tapu, or Bird Hill, is home to a vast variety of birds, many of them endemic to the islands. Here, you can observe endemic winged beauties like the Andaman Green Pigeon, Andaman Woodpecker, the Andaman
Bulbul, Andaman Coucal, Hume’s Hawk-Owl, White-headed Starling, Andaman Drongo, and many many more, as well as other non-endemic birds that are easier to encounter here than in much of the rest of India, such as Slaty-breasted Rail, Black-naped Tern, Black Baza, Violet Cuckoo and Beach Thick-knee.

The rainforests and mangroves of South Andaman island are also a great place to search for the endemics, including the Andaman Masked Owl! This is also a place to see many species not easily encountered on the Indian mainland, a good variety of passage migrants, and the occasional chance
of a rarity.

In addition, for those who are interested in the wildlife under the sea, there will also be opportunities for snorkeling the wonderful coral reefs around the islands!
