Overview
Madhya Pradesh, in central India, is truly the heart of Wild India. The tiger reserves here are not only well-known, but also among the best tiger habitats in the country. This tour gives you the opportunity to visit two of these beautiful forests: Pench and Kanha. Both of these jungles have played a role in the creation of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book, with Kanha being one of the major inspirations, and Pench being the setting for the story of Mowgli.
Kanha National Park is the largest national park in Madhya Pradesh, India. Created in 1955, the tiger reserve has significant populations of tiger, sloth bear, and leopard, as well as other mammals, as well as around 300 species of birds. The Southern Swamp Deer (or Hard-ground Barasingha) is found only in Kanha, although relocation efforts are underway in other places in central India.
Pench National Park is located in central India, on the border of the states of Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh. Established in 1975, it gets its name from the Pench River that flows through the park, dividing it into almost equal halves. The well-forested area of Seoni is famous as the setting of Rudyard Kipling’s The Jungle Book. The main attraction here is the tiger, although the park also has a good population of leopard, sloth bear, and several deer species, as well as being home to many birds.
Few know that both the Pench and Kanha National Parks in Central India have a relationship with Rudyard Kipling's "The Jungle Book". While the jungles of Kanha served as a massive inspiration for the stories, they were set in the forests in and around what is now Pench. A variety of scenic landscapes, a wealth of mammals like Tiger, Leopard, Sloth Bear, Indian Wolf, Striped Hyena, Sloth Bear, Hard-ground Barasingha to name a few, birds like White-naped Woodpecker, Indian Pitta, White-rumped Shama, Brown Wood, and Indian Scops Owls, and more, and even the rich tribal culture all exist here! It's easy to see how they can inspire countless tales. Why don't you create one of your own? Come write your own Jungle Book with a visit to Kanha and Pench National Parks.
