Overview
Tigers and leopards are the most popular and most iconic of India’s big cats. Their presence in a jungle is an attestation of the natural health of the habitat. This tour takes you to the beautiful forests of Nagarhole in South India, in search of the tiger and the leopard, including the even more elusive melanistic form of the latter, popularly known as a Black Panther.
Nagarhole (or Rajiv Gandhi) National Park is located in the Kodagu (Coorg) and Mysore districts in Karnataka. Along with the adjoining Bandipur Tiger Reserve, it is one of India’s premier tiger reserves.
This park was declared the thirty-seventh tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1999. It is part of the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve. The Western Ghats Nilgiri sub-cluster of 6,000 sq. km (2,300 sq mi), including all of Nagarhole National Park, is under consideration by the UNESCO World Heritage Committee for selection as a World Heritage Site.
The park has rich forest cover, small streams, hills, valleys, and waterfalls. The park has a healthy predator-prey ratio, with many tigers, Gaur, elephants, Indian leopards (including melanistic or black leopards), and deer (Chital, Sambar, etc.).

In between activities you could check out the grounds around the lodge. Additional species might include Greater Racket-tailed and White-bellied Drongo, Velvet-fronted Nuthatch, Black-hooded and Golden Orioles, Grey-breasted Prinia, Purple-rumped Sunbird, Yellow-billed Babbler, (Southern) Hill Myna, Chestnut-tailed Starling, Large and Black-headed Cuckoo-shrike, Small Minivet, Common Iora, and Pale-billed Flowerpecker.
