Although many wildlifers tend to concentrate on mammals and birds, India is also home to an amazingly rich diversity of other unique wildlife, which most wildlifers and photographers tend to ignore, and which are sometimes more interesting.
The forest patches, streams, and even plantation roads of Amboli, in the Western Ghats of Maharashtra, provide a great opportunity to look for some of the region’s best butterflies, including Paris Peacock, Red Helen, Common Mormon, Blue Oakleaf, Red Pierrots, Angled Pierrots, and more. Amboli’s biodiversity was staggering. It has over 35 species of mammals, a growing list of over 200 species of birds, approximately 150 species of butterflies, and over 45 species of reptiles and amphibians (the list constantly updated), some endemic to Amboli and others to the larger Western Ghats
In addition, the monsoon is the perfect time to find beautiful endemic amphibians like Malabar Gliding Frog, Amboli Toad, Amboli Bush Frog, and many more, as well as stunning snakes like Green Vine Snake, Bronzeback Tree Snake, the endemic Malabar Pit Viper, and many shieldtail species.
Not only you will have an experience to remember in Amboli with Herpetofauna and Lepidoptera of the Western Ghats, you will also be a part of the conservation effort of these species, most of which are data deficient. Your records when uploaded to citizen science portals like iNaturalist or India Biodiversity Portal, will be data for researchers working on biodiversity of the place.

Pickup from Goa and drive to Amboli.
“Amboli Ghat is a hill station in Maharashtra. This area is known as a biodiversity hotspot because of so many endemic species that are found in Amboli Ghat. The huge amount of rain it receives (it’s one of the wettest places in India) along with the cooler temperature makes all the flora and fauna very unique to that place."
We go and explore the small village of Amboli. We are always delighted by the flora and fauna that we find there. Macro Photography is an added attraction in Amboli given the diversity of insect fauna including butterflies.
Excellent biodiversity, great climate and yummy Konkani food is what is waiting for us.
After reaching Amboli and settling in, our expert guide will facilitate a mutual introduction and an orientation to the tour. That evening, we will take a walk into the wild to get acquainted with the terrain and the weather, and the creatures we will probably encounter over the subsequent days.

In the evening, we will explore the area for creatures that are active in the night, returning by dinner time. The cooler nights will be a great time to look for the amazing reptiles and amphibians that call Amboli home, many of them endemic to the region.
