Overview
Kashmir lies at the northern extreme of the Indian Subcontinent and in terms of birding, as well as culture, offers a stark contrast to the rest of the country. Kashmir's position means that, particularly in winter and during migration, birds from the northern Palearctic turn up as vagrants, and there are a number of sightings of species not recorded elsewhere in India. In spring and summer, however, we see peak avian activity with a number of local breeding specialties.
Located close to the Kashmiri capital Srinagar, Dachigam National Park is a must-visit location. The park lists numbers of more than 150 birds, many of which breed here. Dachigam also has a vast variation in altitude, which accounts for different bird communities at different heights, including altitudinal migrants. Many of the grasslands and meadows are covered in flowers through much of the year, making for a fantastic backdrop to your birding and photos. Among the more notable species found here are Besra, Northern Goshawk, Himalayan Griffon, Lammergeier, Himalayan Monal, and Tawny owl to name a few. Also, mammals like Hangul, Jackal, Langur, Leopard, and Yellow-throated Martens are common.
