At first glance, the arid habitats of Gujarat and Rajasthan may seem dry and uninviting, and far from the bird paradises, they are. But a deeper look will prove you wrong, from some amazing birdwatching and wildlife destinations, each with something unique to offer, to the warmth, affection, and hospitality of the people of the region.

Our tour begins as we travel from Delhi to the Chambal River. During this journey, we will be stopping for lunch en route, reaching Chambal for dinner.

Accommodation: Umaid Mahal
After an early breakfast, we will proceed to the Chambal River at Dhaulpur for a boat safari, which will last about 2-3 hours. One of the cleanest rivers in India, the Chambal River is the best place to see the Gharial (or Fish-eating Crocodile), and also many wetland birds like Indian Skimmer, Black-bellied and River Terns, and more. Later, we will proceed to Jaipur, arriving in time for dinner.

Today, we have morning and evening safaris in Jhalana. Not only is Jhalana home to a dense population of leopards and deer, but is also an ideal birding destination, with species like Jungle Nightjar, Spotted Owlet, White-browed Fantail, and more calling it home.
In between the safaris, you will have plenty of free time to explore some of Jaipur’s monuments, which speak to the royal heritage of the city. Visitor attractions include palaces like the Hawa Mahal, Jal Mahal, and City Palace, the Amer, Nahargarh, and Jaigarh Forts, Jantar Mantar, as well as various temples.

From Jaipur and Jhalana, we move further on our leopard quest to Bera. The people of Bera, mostly farmers, coexist peacefully with these predators, which make their homes in the rocky hills surrounding their fields. The hills of Bera are also home to a variety of birds, such as Indian Eagle-Owl, Common Iora, and more, while the fields are good places to look for open-country birds like Indian Roller, Black-winged Kite, and more.

Our day will be spent with morning and afternoon safaris in Bera to look for leopards and our target birds, including Indian Eagle-Owl, Cinereous Tit, Oriental Magpie-Robin, Common Iora, and more. Mostly an arid landscape, the region is mostly agricultural fields and surrounding grassland patches, surrounded by rocky hills.

Today we have 2 more safaris in Bera to look for our targets, including Spotted Owlet, Red-wattled and Yellow-wattled Lapwings, Knob-billed and Lesser Whistling Ducks, Red-naped Ibis, and more.

After breakfast, we will move to Gujarat, our first destination being the Little Rann of Kutch. Lunch will be en route. We will reach the Little Rann in time for dinner.

Today we have morning and evening safaris to explore this saline desert. Apart from the open desert and its surrounding ‘bets’, there is also an opportunity for wetland birding at the lakes and marshes around the Rann. Key species include Indian Wild Ass, Chestnut-bellied Sandgrouse, Indian Spotted Eagle, Eastern Imperial Eagle, Crested Lark, Bimaculated Lark, Peregrine Falcon, Laggar Falcon, Merlin. Winter is the time when Common Cranes, Greylag Geese, and many other waterfowl species are seen in abundance.

Our day starts with a morning safari in Kutch to look for more targets, such as Asian Desert Warbler, Desert and Isabelline Wheatears, Crested and Bimaculated Larks, and more. After breakfast, we will travel to Gir with a packed lunch to be eaten en route, reaching Gir by dinner time.

We have two safaris today in the Gir National Park. The safaris are a great way to get to know the forest better. Apart from lions, Gir is home to a variety of other wildlife, much of it living in harmony with people. You will also have the chance to visit the surrounding villages, giving you a chance to learn about their culture and traditions, and how they live with the wildlife here. If possible, during our evening safari, we can visit the Kamleshwar Dam, a beautiful spot to watch the sunset. One can see many Marsh Crocodiles (Mugger) here, as well as some water birds like Oriental Darter, cormorants, waders, and Western Osprey.

We have two more safaris in the park today. Multiple safaris will not only give us more chances for finding our targets, but also enable us to explore the jungle more, unlocking more wild treasures.

Accommodation: Blackbuck Safari Lodge
After breakfast, we depart Gir and travel to Velavadar National Park with a packed lunch to be eaten en route. We will reach Velavadar in time for dinner.

We have the entire day today to explore the Velavadar National Park with two safaris. Created for the conservation of the Blackbuck, Velavadar is a tiny but unique grassland ecosystem. The Indian Wolf and the Golden Jackal are the main predators in the park. Other mammals likely to be seen are Bengal Fox, Indian Hare, Indian Desert Gerbil, Jungle Cat, and Nilgai. Birds include Pallid Harrier, Montagu’s Harrier, Short-toed Snake Eagle, Siberian Stonechat, Tawny Eagle, Indian Spotted Eagle, and Red-necked Falcon.

Meals: Breakfast and Packed Lunch from Velavadar, Dinner in Delhi
Accommodation: Hotel Shanti Palace
Sadly, all adventures must come to an end. After a sumptuous breakfast in Velavadar, we will travel to Ahmedabad (with a packed lunch), from where you will board your flight back to Delhi, reaching for dinner.
